The idea for the Selling Better movement and sales methodology started back on 9 January 1995, when I launched Barrett Consulting Group with just $3,000. I wanted to put humanity back on the corporate map which is why Selling Better isn’t about manipulation or pressure, but about genuine connection and shared value. This philosophy and its sales methodology replaces pushy sales tactics with authentic listening, building trust, and offering real benefits. Selling Better is a business savvy and emotionally intelligent way of selling.

Key advantages:

  • Personal Touch: Build strong relationships and understand your client’s needs.
  • Professional Powerhouse: Master sales skills and confidently articulate your value.
  • Business Booster: Create loyal customers and a thriving community around your brand.
  • Psychological Playground: Find joy and meaning in selling the right way.

Selling Better shines a light on ethical practices, offering a path away from corruption and towards sustainable and mutual success. It’s about reclaiming your humanity in business and building a world where people connect, grow, and thrive through meaningful sales.

Imagine a world where sales isn’t a dirty word, a game of manipulation, or a soul-crushing grind. Picture a space where selling is a dance of mutual respect, a journey of shared value creation, and a celebration of human connection.

This, my friends, is the vision I had back on 9 January 1995 when I started Barrett Consulting Group with a mere $3,000. Surrounded by ever rising levels of corruption and inequality, I decided to take the road less travelled and start, what is now known as the Selling Better movement, a revolution brewing in the heart of the business and sales world.

2024 heralds 41 years in sales for me and it’s easy to understand why the word “selling” gets a bad rap. We’ve all been bombarded by pushy salespeople, forced-fed pitches, and the nagging feeling of being treated like a number, not a person. But over the last 29 years my team and I have found another way – a better way. A way that weaves together the pursuit of profit AND the well-being of people, the needs of businesses AND the desires of individuals. It’s the business savvy and emotionally intelligent way of selling.

Selling Better isn’t just a catchy slogan; it’s a philosophy, a sales methodology, and a movement fuelled by a simple yet powerful truth: humanity sells better. What we have found and validated is when we focus on understanding people’s needs, building trust, and offering genuine value, magical things happen. The scrouge of moral disengagement and unethical practices fades away, replaced by a symphony of mutual benefit.

So, how does it work? Let’s break down the Selling Better magic into four key benefits:

  1. The Personal Touch: Forget the robotic sales scripts and forced smiles. Selling Better champions authentic connection. It encourages you to truly listen to your client, understand their story, and tailor your approach to their unique needs. This isn’t just good business; it’s good for the soul. Building genuine relationships fosters trust, loyalty, and a sense of purpose that transcends the transactional.
  2. The Professional Powerhouse: Selling Better sales methodology isn’t about shortcuts or gimmicks. It’s about honing your skills and becoming a master of your craft. The movement provides a robust sales methodology, packed with tools and techniques to help you learn and navigate the sales landscape with confidence. From active listening, effective questioning to masterful storytelling, you’ll learn to articulate your value proposition with clarity and conviction.
  3. The Business Booster: It’s no secret that happy customers translate to happy bottom lines. By focusing on building long-term relationships and genuine value, Selling Better helps businesses cultivate loyal customers who become advocates for your brand. This sustainable approach leads to repeat business, positive word-of-mouth, and a thriving community around your product or service.
  4. The Psychological Playground: Let’s be honest, the pressure of sales can be soul-crushing. But Selling Better flips the script. By prioritising human connection and ethical practices, it injects a dose of joy and meaning back into the sales process. Many people find they’re energised by the genuine connections they build, empowered by the positive impact they make, and motivated by the knowledge that they’re doing business the right way.

So, what about corruption? The dark underbelly of unethical sales practices? Selling Better shines a light on this issue, not with a judgmental finger, but with a compassionate hand. It offers a path away from the quick fix and the shady deal, towards a future where integrity and transparency pave the way for sustainable success.

This isn’t just about selling more; it’s about selling better. It’s about reclaiming our humanity in the face of bottom lines and quotas. It’s about building a business world where people don’t just buy and sell, they connect, they grow, they thrive, together.

I want to thank my team (past and present) and all of our clients, who, over the last 29 years, have helped us shape and refine the Selling Better sales methodology and philosophy and get it to what it is today. “The change has been outstanding. Two years ago I couldn’t have imagined that Sales would be in such great shape already. I thought it would’ve taken years but here we are now with a fantastic sales team, sales infrastructure and processes, strategy and culture that is growing and making a huge difference to our business and our clients. As an accountant, I knew very little about sales but Barrett’s Sales Strategy & Operations Framework and the Barrett team have steered us in the right direction.”
