No More Games: Fostering Healthy Relationships

No more games*! Now more one-upmanship! No more outfoxing, outsmarting or outwitting others at their expense!

Instead, what about playing it straight and acting with honesty, integrity, and transparency?

What about prioritising and fostering healthy relationships in business and life?

In this pandemic VUCA** riddled world, many people already have a lot on their minds, assessing risk and worrying about their future. Being in a constant state of wariness is exhausting.

Finding someone you can trust and rely upon to do a good job, someone who wants to work with you, has your back, and understands and respects you in this turbulent sea of …

Decarbonised Economic Models & Systems

“It is not for us to forecast the future, but to shape it”. Antoine de Saint-Exupery

In Sales Trend 6 we explored decarbonised sales systems and sales strategies. In Sales Trends 7 we look at economic models that promote decarbonised systems and organisations.

Key operating models that can be deployed now and in the immediate future to create decarbonised economies, business models, and in turn sales systems and operations include Circular Economy, GreenShoring, and Doughnut Economics.

Circular Economy

Circular Economy is an alternative to the linear “Take, Make, Consume and Dispose” mindset and business model which can help deliver …

Barrett – participant of the United Nations Global Compact

As a business, Barrett has been committed to ethical business and sales practices since we opened our doors in 1995. We have remained true to our principles and values that reflect that commitment:

  • Ethical, human-centred and sustainable selling practices and ethos
  • Fair and mutual exchange of value
  • Mutual success and prosperity
  • Long term sustainability
  • Designing and enacting business, leadership, and sales practices for a better world

In December 2009 we published the first issue of the Barrett 12 Sales Trends Report. It was titled ‘12 Sales Trends for 2010: No more “Business as usual”’. Sales trend 10 in that report was focused on sustainable selling – …

A Teal Test of Character

As the saying goes “A crisis doesn’t develop character, it reveals character”.

And there is nothing like leading and working on a political campaign to test one’s character.

In early November 2021 I accepted the offer of becoming Zoe Daniel’s campaign manager for the seat of Goldstein at the 2022 Federal Election.

I didn’t accept the offer lightly. Truth is I have never run a political campaign of any kind before, but when I thought about it, a political campaign is the ultimate example of an on-the-ground human-to-human sales led campaign and I have helped run many successful sales led campaigns before …

The Economic & Business Case for Decarbonising Sales Operations

In Sales Trend 2 of the Barrett 12 Sales Trends Report for 2022 the numbers speak for themselves, but we still looked a bit further into the business case for decarbonising sales operations.

This is a condensed version of Sales Trend 2, to read the original version you can download the report for free.

The numbers speak for themselves

When it comes to the economic case to decarbonise, the numbers speak for themselves.

In Australia:

Cost of keep on going as we are now over the next 30 years:                                  $ 1,890,000,000,000

Cost of achieving net-zero emissions …

The Moral Case for Decarbonising Sales Operations

Sales trend 1 of the Barrett 12 Sales Trends Report for 2022 is the moral case for decarbonising sales operations.

This is a condensed version of Sales Trend 1, to read the original version you can download the report for free.

I became consciously aware of climate change and its physical, economic, and moral impacts in 1989, even though scientists had been talking about this since the 1970s. Since then, I’ve been actively informing myself about climate science and the changes required to create a sustainable future for all with my first act of climate awareness being a switch to …

Ch-ch-ch-ch Changes… why it pays to be an early adopter & change agent

Welcome to 2022. Each year I write a reflection piece on achieving another year in business. On 9th January 2022, we celebrated 27 years, and I couldn’t think of a more appropriate theme than David Bowie’s song, Changes.

These song lyrics seem rather apt given the current times and the journey that my team and I have been on over the last nearly 3 decades, especially the last two as we all navigate and enter yet another covid pandemic year.

To me Changes is about finding your voice, your purpose, and not accepting the status quo. Changes is about not being bullied …

Selfishness is NOT next to godliness: An Antidote to Corruption

The 9th of December is International Anti-corruption Day, and corruption is rife at the moment.

When you have senior politicians and business leaders downplaying their corruption as business as usual, Houston we have a problem.

The UN states “Corruption affects all areas of society. Preventing corruption unlocks progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals, helps protect our planet, creates jobs, achieves gender equality, and secures wider access to essential services such as healthcare and education.

“The 2021 International Anti-Corruption Day seeks to highlight the rights and responsibilities of everyone – including States, Government officials, civil servants, law enforcement officers, media representatives, the …

COP26 – What’s the future for business and sales?

Australia is like Goldilocks – we are not too small or too large – we are just the right size population-wise to make real and effective change and become the economic and environmentally sustainable model of the world in how to live and work as a peaceful and prosperous society.

There’s climate leadership coming from Australian states and territories, key businesses and industry sectors, and certain business and community groups. They are showing us what works and the benefits that decarbonising our economy can bring like regional jobs, cleaner cities, and cheaper power.

To truly decarbonise our businesses and societies by 2035, …

World Gratitude Day: The Moral Case for Gratitude, especially in uncertain times

Tuesday 21 September 2021, is World Gratitude Day

In March 2019, I published my first paperback book: 142 Days of Gratitude that changed my life forever

It is part memoir, part self-help, part business book all underpinned by science and philosophy.

In it I wrote a chapter about the moral case for gratitude. Given we are living in uncertain times I thought we could reflect for at least a few minutes, the time it takes you to read this article, on the power of gratitude to change our lives for the better.

So here’s my contribution to World Gratitude Day.
