It’s Women’s Health Week (7 – 11 September). This is a national campaign, raising awareness of the importance of maintaining good health and well-being for all women and girls.

As a woman who’s been in business and sales for over 30 years, a business owner for 25 years of those years and a working mother for 22 years, I thought I’d weigh into this topic and share …

A ready-to-go program to avoid the ‘Insolvency Tsunami’ & save your business

I read an article in The Age, Thursday 23 July 2020 about how some of the major banks are warning against jumping on the debt bandwagon to save businesses during the crisis, despite the tax payer backed loan scheme. I couldn’t agree more. Any self-respecting business, especially SMEs cannot and shouldn’t borrow more money if they do not have some certainty about where their business opportunities, customers, and sales revenue is going to come from now and in the future.

Earlier in the week I also read a press release by Kate Carnell, the Australian Small Business & Family Enterprise Ombudsman, which …

Lessons I’m learning about myself & my business during COVID-19

This crisis is, in my humble opinion, a test of character for me and I would say for many other people.

It has put everything I care for, value and taken for granted on notice. Not that I wasn’t aware of or didn’t pay attention to these things before. I am a very attentive and purposeful person; however, this pandemic has put everything on the table for a thorough examination.

I recall, as the COVID-19 shutdown hit, the very first thing I did was gather my team together and I said this:

“Our number one goal is to stay together and …

25 years of helping people and businesses sell better for a sustainable future

This year we are celebrating 25 years in business.

Barrett opened on January 9th, 1995 with $3,000 and a purpose of helping people & businesses sell better now and for a sustainable future. Here’s our story in a just-over-4 minutes video about our journey so far.

Or if you prefer to read about it, here’s the transcript:

“Two years ago, I asked the Executive GM of a listed company to go out on a limb.

His business was in flux and sales falling. Like many leaders, he thought sales training was THE solution.

Training would happen, I said, but not yet.

Instead, I asked him to, …

Fairness in trading terms for SMEs

You know the story ‘small business wins huge deal with large client’. Amazing.

Everyone is celebrating. ‘Biggest deal we’ve ever had. OMG’

So after the win, the small business sends their terms and conditions for signing and the big client comes back with “we can’t sign your payment terms of 14 days, our payment terms are 60 days after the end of the month of invoice”, that is, if you are lucky, because the reality can be  90 days or more. Which is really bad for business, especially small businesses.

But, the small business agrees because ‘it’s such a good opportunity’ not necessarily …

Celebrating 25 years of Helping People & Businesses Sell Better

The 9th January, 2020 marks 25 years in business for Barrett.

25 years of helping people and businesses sell better.

25 years of exploration, research, experimentation, creation, building, encouragement and promotion of, and learning and education in ethical human centred sales systems, strategies, processes and practices.

25 years of a self-funded research project focused on creating The Selling Better Movement with the hope it will help people understand that there’s a better way of doing business.

A way in which we can all be prosperous.

I started the business out of my home office with $3,000 in capital on 9 January, 1995 with an idea …

One main reason most start-ups fail

Anyone can have an idea. Ideas are cheap and they are plenty.

The challenge is turning that ‘amazing’ idea or invention into a commercially viable business entity.

Many people throw their hearts, souls, energy and wallets into developing their idea. Designing, crafting and forming it. Then thinking about ways how they are going to market their idea to customers using marketing strategies and tactics. They are looking from the inside out.

Yet the key questions many start-ups fail to explore first are:

  • Are there customers and markets looking for a solution that your idea can solve?
  • Are these potential customers prepared to pay for your …

Someone has to sell, or you don’t have a business

Someone has to do the selling or you don’t have a business.

I have met many people over the years who have great ideas, skills, processes or inventions but hate the thought of selling.

They usually come from two camps:

Camp 1: Those people who understand they have to sell in order to have a business but just do not know how to do it. They often harbour some fears and anxieties about selling because of its bad public reputation and can feel overwhelmed about what they have to do. However, I find these people are willing to have a go.

I will gladly …

24 years in business and 24 Big Lessons to share

This week marks the 24th anniversary since I founded Barrett and, over the summer break, I had some time to reflect upon myself, my business’ journey and the many, many lessons learned over the last 24 years.

We often get our ‘business lessons’ from big corporates about how to do this or that; however, I have found that many of these corporate lessons do not always translate well into small (few than 20 employees) to medium sized businesses which make up over 90% of all business in Australia.

So given that I fall into that 90+% category and have managed to …

The road less travelled – Selling Better

On 9 January, 1995 I took the road less travelled when I chose to start my business dedicated to Selling Better rather than follow the traditional path of Selling More, and that has made all the difference.

As a business owner, entrepreneur, and pattern systems thinker amongst other things, it has been a fascinating and interesting journey of discovery on many levels: personally, professionally, intellectually, culturally, ethically, philosophically, and systems-wise.

While I am originally a science graduate who specialised in medical and biological subjects, I have adapted and evolved into an architect, engineer, behavioural scientist and philosopher who focuses …
